I’m dead on my feet by the time dawn comes. We’ve been playin’ cards in the front room for hours—far enough over that our small flashlight can’t be seen from the road but close enough that we’ll see it if the truck pulls down the drive again. The sky has just started to lighten, and by now the game we’ve been playin’ has started to lose all meanin’.

“They ain’t comin’,” Angus says, throwin’ the cards down.

“You ready to go?” I am, but I ain’t sure how I’m gonna stay awake long enough to get back. I feel like I’m ‘bout to fall over.

“Yeah. Let’s get the hell outta here.”

We throw some snow on the fire before we head out, takin’ the supplies I found with us. I can only hope the air is cold enough to keep me awake on the fifteen-minute drive home. The sun has started comin’ up, but it’s still dark, and I’m fuckin’ exhausted. I’m ready to strip down so I can sleep for a few hours. I don’t sleep much, but even I gotta have more rest than this.

We get the snowmobiles outta the garage, and Angus heads off. I follow, the trailer bouncin’ ‘cross the snow behind me. We ain’t too far from home when a deer jumps out in front of us. It’s a doe. Angus whoops when he sees it and whips out his gun, not even slowin’. Thankfully, we’ve had more than enough practice shootin’ at movin’ targets—although the deer is a helluva lot faster than the zombies ever were.

The animal jumps over piles of snow as it dashes across the field. Angus fires, and the sound of the gunshot echoes through the silence, even louder than the engines. The deer keeps runnin’, so Angus fires again, and this time the thing jumps in the air. It runs a few more steps on wobbly legs before collapsin’ on the ground, and Angus lets out another whoop of joy that can be heard even over the snowmobiles.

I follow him over to the deer, comin’ to a stop just as he hops off his snowmobile. The deer is layin’ on the ground, not breathin’, and under her the snow has turned dark red.

“Look at that!” Angus calls. “We got us some food!”

“‘Bout time. I was really startin’ to think the zombies had killed all the animals.”

Angus grins up at me from where he’s kneelin’ on the ground, and it hits me hard. I ain’t ever seen my brother look this happy. Not even before the virus hit, which is just crazy.

“Don’t you worry, little brother. I told you a long time ago that I was gonna take care of you, and I ain’t changed my mind yet. We’re gonna get through this. Together.”

I laugh even though I’m beat and I know everybody back home is probably worried sick. This deer is gonna hold us up a little bit, but it’ll be worth it, because it’ll mean food.

“Let’s get this thing field dressed and on the trailer so we can head back,” I say, pullin’ out my knife.
